Here are a sampling of ways that you can make a difference through advocacy today. We invite you to share other opportunities with us!
Healthcare Workers for Mothers and Children
On June 25, 2010, G8 leaders will meet to develop a comprehensive package to promote the health of mothers and children in the developing world. One vital piece of this is a commitment to recruit and train 3.5 million additional healthcare workers, giving vulnerable children a better chance to survive and thrive.
Save Lives through Vaccines
Pneumonia and Rotavirus are the biggest killers of children under the age of 5, even though vaccines are available that could save the lives of 1.5 million children each year. Ask President Obama to make Pneumonia and Rotavirus vaccines a priority in U.S. relief funding, and to address this pressing issue at the 36th annual G-8 summit in July.
Stop Promoting Violent and Sexualized Games to Children
The list of “Nickelodeon Kids and Family Websites” at Nick.com includes Addicting Games. This website gives children access to some highly sexualized and horrifically violent games. Nickelodeon TV also promotes this website by airing the Addicting Games Showdown. Tell Nickelodeon to cut all associations with Addicting Games and be more responsible about the material it promotes to children.
Close the School of the Americas
Graduates of the School of the Americas, a training base for Latin American military officers, have perpetrated numerous human rights abuses. Four activists were arrested last fall for trespassing during a vigil at the base, and three have been sentenced to the maximum sentence of six months in federal prison. “Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them” (Hebrews 13:3).
A Pledge to the Next Generation
The oil spill disaster demands a combined response of corporate responsibility, government regulation, and civic mobilization. But this crisis also calls us to a personal commitment: a conversion of our habits of the heart, our energy sources, and our lifestyle choices. As those charged with stewarding God’s creation, the community of faith must lead the way in responding to the present crisis and in forging a new future for our society.
