Bob Herbert deserves to be nominated for the "Man of the Year" award.  Last October, after 15 Amish girls were shot (5 killed) in Pennsylvania, Herbert asked "Why Aren't We Shocked?" by the violence perpetrated against women.  He pointed out how much violence is daily tolerated and even encouraged by contemporary culture, from the music and fashion industries to the advertising and film industries. And in November of last year, he deplored what he described as the global war against women in his article "Punished for Being Female." In it, he wrote with horror about bride burnings, honor killings, female infanticide, and rape as a weapon of war as forms of violence against women which damage or take countless lives.

Now he's taking on the sex trade and, thank God, unapologetically blowing back the elaborate smokescreens erected by its perpetrators.  His latest columns have exposed Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman's efforts to celebrate rape by selling his city as a veritable Disneyland of prostitution.

If you subscribe to the Times Select, you can read Herbert's columns online.  His most recent offerings are "City as predator: Women lose in Vegas" (9.4.07), "Escape from Las Vegas" (9.8.07), and "Fantasies, Well Meant" (9.11.07).  (If you don't subscribe to the Times, you can often find his columns reproduced elsewhere; see below for alternative links.)

If you care about ending sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation, please join us in emailing Bob Herbert to say "thank you" for being brave and truthful enough to speak out on behalf of women in prostitution. Times Select subscribers can submit feedback online ($7.95/month or $49.95/year—a small price, we believe, to compliment a man who speaks consistently—and in the secular media—on behalf of women and girls that the world long ago wrote off as "just prostitutes"), or you can send a letter to the Times editor.  Abolition!

Lisa L. Thompson is liaison for the Abolition of Sexual Trafficking for the Salvation Army National Headquarters. Kristyn Komarnicki is the editor of PRISM magazine as well as the ePistle's Christ & Culture community.
